grief studios
Beginning this Fall, I’m offering a regular live event called Grief Studios for paid subscribers and current students. These seasonal studios will be held every month, and will be a space to dialogue with, make, and share your own art and writing alongside other grievers. 🕸️

What if our creative practices are also practices of composting impossibility?
WHAT IF THE WAY GRIEF DESTABILIZES & DECOMPOSES US IS ALSO A CREATIVE PROCESS?
Structure for Grief Studios*:
Welcome & Grounding
Small group discussion around a particular theme, tarot card, plant, or text related to grief
Intention Setting for your creative practice
Creative Exploration/Studio time: Undirected, parallel play/creative exploration using whatever mediums/materials you feel called to, with the understanding that all of life can be lived as art, and that our artmaking gets to be a practice of attunement to ourselves and the world around us. Studio time can include anything from painting, collaging, dusting off your apothecary shelves, making tea, making music, rearranging your room, casting a spell, cooking a meal, or simply laying down and allowing yourself to rest as a creative practice…
Reflection: Set aside time to free-write/reflect on your creative process, and witness and dialogue with your own art/creative process as if it were animate and speaking to you.
Witnessing one another: Time to share our art and reflections with one another, without the intentions to critique or comment. Here we are simply in the magic of witness - hearing ourselves share, feeling ourselves be heard and received by one another.
*This structure is adapted from the lineage of the Jewish Studio Process, whose two year Creative Facilitator Training Fellowship I am currently in and deeply grateful for!
Sessions (not including break out rooms!) will be recorded for those unable to make them live ✨
About me
My name is Mara June (they/them).
I am not a grief expert nor a grief therapist. I am just another human disrupted by grief. Being present with death and grief has assured me that there is lots I don’t know and lots I won’t figure out.
And I am a space holder and a creative facilitator, writer, and creator, who feels a deep need to create collective experiences to be with grief and uncertainty—as well as to be with joy, play, and imagination, and magic.
I am a collector and tender of questions, stories, and inspiration. I am learning and unlearning alongside you how to stay with the trouble of our times, and how to make trouble for systems that depend the repression of our grief and joy.
To learn more about me, my trainings, approaches, and background, check out my about me page.
Not interested in being on substack but still want to join grief studios?
You can make join by making monthly payments below.
For those who signed up prior to November 4th, 10% of proceeds will go towards Many Lands Mutual Aid in Gaza. Moving forward, I’m consolidating fundraising efforts into the courses I offer, as grief studio subscriptions fluctuate and are a bit more challenging to track. You can learn about and directly donate to Many Lands Mutual Aid here.
If you'd like to directly donate to WNC mutual aid post Hurricane Helene, click here. .
free for those impacted by hurricane season
If you are directly impacted by Hurricane Helene (or any of the hurricanes this season) and seeking a free spot in our upcoming Grief Studio, please RSVP here.

My courses are structured differently in various ways. While grief studios are similar to the studio sessions of the Tears of the Gods and Grief Magic courses - in those spaces, there are various models and structures of studio and parallel art making that we explore. Grief studios also difffer from cohort based courses with me in that in courses, you’ll also have a higher frequency of sessions, more time for discussion and getting to know cohort members, a cohort discord for connecting outside of class, occasional guest speakers, etc. In my courses, we are not adhering to the Jewish/Open studio processes, though we are drawing from them. Monthly grief studios are for those looking for the specific kind of structure offered here and laid out above!
